Nyman: Wish-washy on Welfare and Illegal Immigrants Costly for Taxpayers

Rockland, MA – Today Lou Valanzola, candidate for State Representative, criticized incumbent Rhonda Nyman’s voting record on two key taxpayer issues—welfare and illegal immigration.

“Taxpayers have been consistently hit with increases in fees and taxes while accountability of their dollars has been lax,” said Valanzola.  “Why doesn’t Rep. Nyman want another audit of the welfare department that has had so many problems?  Why wouldn’t she stand up for the taxpayers of her district instead of protecting government bureaucrats?”

Valanzola is running a campaign on how he would represent the hard working people of this district and not be a vote for the Beacon Hill power structure that ignores the taxpayers.

Today Valanzola points out 5 votes Rep. Nyman took that were not pro-taxpayer.  They are:

  1. Roll Call 160 and 232.  These votes would have required another audit of the Department of Transitional Assistance (welfare).  Both the Inspector General and the State Auditor found gross errors within the system such as dead people collecting benefits.  Valanzola believes that another audit would be appropriate to make sure the problems are being fixed.
  2. Roll Call 247.  This vote would stop self-declarations for welfare recipients receiving rental assistance.  Right now, recipients don’t have to provide proof on how much they are paying in rent.  They are allowed to self-declare to get taxpayer funded benefits.  Valanzola believes that is an open door policy for fraud.
  3. Roll Call 248.  This vote would have stopped EBT recipients from accessing benefits out of state.  Only border states would be allowed.  Valanzola believes that EBT cards should not be used to go on vacation.
  4. Roll Call 28.  This vote would have required verification of where people live to receive public assistance.  Valanzola believes that taxpayer funded benefits should not be going to illegal immigrants.
  5. Roll Call 36 and 78.  These votes would have prohibited in-state tuition rates for illegal immigrants.  Valanzola believes it is unfair to allow illegal immigrants to get costly tuition breaks when legal residents of bordering states pay a higher rate.

“My background as a controller will allow me to provide the leadership on the serious financial issues confronting our state.  The taxpayers need a fiscal watchdog,” said Valanzola.
